Emma Lang is a visual artist and poet working from Berlin and xwməθkwəy̓ əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Vancouver) territory. She develops projects from literary, theoretical, poetic and oneiric research. From there, her works—material, sonic, poetic, and performative—critically enact provisional infrastructures: nested ‘second-worlds’, as sites that invite shared states of disorientation. This threshold site of relationality is treated as a register of expanded accessibility.
Previously trained as a marine biologist, having followed a recurring night dream of riding humpback whales into the waking world as a field research assistant at the Alaska Whale Foundation, Emma’s practice retains a sensitivity to ecosystem logic and multi-scale-complexity, from the cellular to the biospheric. She is often affected site-responsively, and she remains prone to following night dreams.
Emma’s works have recently been presented at Odd Meridian (Vancouver), Floating University (Berlin), Sumac Space (Berlin), as well as broadcast on Refuge Radio, Lumbung Radio, and Strategies Radio for Bienal de São Paulo. Within her performance collective, studio lang, she is a recent recipient of a Canada Council for the Arts grant for research and creation. She is currently pursuing a theory/praxis Master’s in Raumstrategien at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, under Prof. Dr. Bonaventure Ndikung and Prof. Pauline Doutreluingne.
She is also one half of studio lang (c.2024), a collective created with twin sister, Allison Lang.
